The internationals are coming to an end now and we can finally get back to some Premier League footy on the weekend! One player who is probably looking forward to this weekends game against Newcastle as much as we are is Glen Johnson.

The Liverpool right back resumed training again today at Melwood and is hoping to be in contention to play some part in the game against Newcastle.

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge believes that Johnson should start for Liverpool this weekend. Aldridge was speaking in the Liverpool Echo about how important Johnson would be to the side on Saturday.

“The return to fitness of Glen Johnson is a big boost for Liverpool and I’d like to see him straight back in the starting line up for Saturday’s trip to Newcastle United.

Johnson is a real threat when he goes forward and that right wing-back role is made for him.

Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling have played there while Johnson was out with an ankle injury but neither are as well suited to that position. Liverpool will be significantly strengthened by Johnson’s comeback.”

There is no doubt that Johnson would give us more attacking options down the right compared to Henderson and Sterling but whether Johnson is fit to start a game right now following his injury still needs to be seen.

If Johnson is fit to get straight back into the team then he should certainly start. Jordan Henderson played very well against Crystal Palace when he played in the centre of midfield and I would like to see him continue there alongside Gerrard meaning that Lucas would be relegated to the bench. That would free Johnson up to slot in at right back giving us much more balance in the side.

Edward Lane recently wrote an article titled “Is Glen Johnson Liverpool’s most important player?” If you can take some time to read through that article, you will see how important Johnson is to Liverpool thus we need him back on the field as soon as possible.
