Having played every minute for Liverpool in last seasons Premier League, Martin Skrtel is set to miss the start of the upcoming season due to a calf injury.

“I suffered an injury setback on Friday,” Skrtel said.

“I felt strong pain in my leg so I am back with the doctors receiving treatment.

“I really don’t know how long will it take to heal. I am doing my best to be back as soon as possible.”

Hopefully this will not turn out to be a serious injury and we will have him back in action soon. This now means that Carragher and Agger are set to start as our centre-back pair this season, that is if Agger does not pick up an injury before August 13 as we all know he has injury problems. If fit, it will give Agger the chance to establish himself as the first choice partner to Carragher and keep his place in the side even when Skrtel is fit again.

Agger has had a very good pre-season thus far having scored a brace against Valerenga. But the Danish star is not happy with the way Liverpool have been defending this summer and hopes that things change by the time we play Sunderland. Agger said after the Valerenga game, “We need to show we can keep a clean sheet and we have got to defend better.”

There is still talk of Liverpool bringing in another centre-back this summer. The likes of Scott Dann, Ryan Shawcross and Gary Cahill have been mentioned. With Carragher getting on in age, it may be the right time now to bring in a new younger, established centre-back.
