A 14million Euros move to Real Madrid followed but Drenthe struggled to assert himself under any of the three managers he worked under and was loaned-out to newly promoted Hercules when Jose Mourinho arrived at the Bernabeu last summer. Although his adopted club failed to secure a second season in Spanish football’s top-flight, the 24 year-old performed capably, displaying flashes of the electric speed and skill he once exhibited for the Dutch youth team. He fell out of favour towards the end of his tenure due to a dispute regarding the team’s management, and has now returned to his parent club in Madrid who would be willing to accept minimal bids for a player who still has lots of promise.
