As if Liverpool’s injury crisis was not getting any worse, news coming out of Melwood this Friday morning is not good at all. Steven Gerrard will not take part for the rest of the season.
Gerrard underwent groin surgery last month, but suffered a setback in training last week and subsequently missed Saturday’s clash with West Brom.
“We still don’t know definitively what the problem is,” said the Dalglish.
“We will wait to get a precise answer from the people that he has to see but he won’t be involved again this season.”
With Gerrard out of action for the rest of the season, this is the perfect opportunity for Jay Spearing to step up and show us what he is made of. Against Sunderland and West Brom in Gerrard’s absence, Spearing has been called upon by Dalglish to play alongside Lucas in central midfield. Spearing did very well against Sunderland but was slightly less effective against West Brom. Now if Spearing remains fit, I am sure Dalglish is going to stick with him and what better a challenge for the young man than to play against Manchester City and Arsenal in the next couple of games.
I believe the remaining part of the season will now make or break Spearing’s career at Liverpool. He is a local lad and it is always great to see such talent make it into the first team. Spearing has not had too many chances in the first team over the past couple of seasons and as a result we have not really seen what he is made of. He has been called upon once in a while and many fans have not been totally convinced. Now he will get a run-in of potentially 7 games which will show us who Jay Spearing is.
