Suso has signed his first professional contract to keep him at Liverpool until 2013. The young Spanish forward who can also play in midfield signed his contract after turning 17 on Friday. Reports coming out of Liverpool are that Suso is a bright young prospect who has all the potential to be a world class player one day.
This is all good news for Liverpool but I hope they do not ‘throw Suso in the bin’ and break his career. I hear a lot of people saying that players with great potential at 16 and 17 are not ready for first team football and should be nurtured more in the youth teams and reserves but I feel there is a time when the players should be given a chance in the first team, even if they are young. Just look at what we did in the past with Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard by giving them a chance when they were young. Now today, you do not see many 17 or 18 year olds breaking into the first team at Liverpool as we would rather go out and splash the cash on some average players.
If our youth system is as good as they say it is then why are we not letting these young players get a chance in the first team? Just look at Pacheco, he is earmarked as a great player for the future but he has not been given a chance yet in the first team, when will he get it? I was a huge fan of Krisztián Németh but he never really got a look-in at Liverpool and as a result has left the club.
We can not continue to bring up our young players and then not give them a chance. Let us take the gamble and play them, who knows, we could unearth the next Messi. You never know unless you try.
