Aston Villa v Odense BK - Intertoto Cup

Can they make up their mind about this? I am sure I am not the only one who is not happy about this whole Gareth Barry saga. Just a few hours ago, we were led to believe that Villa and Liverpool have agreed a deal for Barry. But now, a statement on the Aston Villa website is saying, “This evening, Aston Villa can announce that Gareth Barry will be staying with the club following the interest from Liverpool over recent months. During discussions in the past few days, a final deadline to conclude this episode was set that all parties were aware of and agreed to. This deadline has now passed and so Gareth will remain with Villa.”

Barry’s agent, Alex Black, insisted that transfer negotiations remain in flux. “The Daily Mail has reported that the deal has been done, but I can assure you that nothing has been done, as of 4.35pm. Like I said, I have no idea where they got that from. I can assure you that the deal has not been done.It is still between the two clubs at the moment. It is still ongoing.”

So clearly, according to Black, the earlier report about Barry was not accurate. I knew it was too good to be true. So now if Villa’s statement is accurate and we have missed out on Barry we can then safely say that Barry will not be a Liverpool player any time soon. But this is the crazy transfer period and anything can happen. I am sure if Liverpool come up with the cash for Barry in two weeks time, Villa will accept it. I do not think this deadline Villa have put means much, it is probably just their way of trying to force Liverpool into making a move soon.

So for now, Barry is not leaving Villa, but we will keep our ears open, who knows what will happen in the next few hours. Stay tuned!
