Congratulations to Spain for making it through to the Euro 2008 final by beating Russia 3 – 0. I have just come from watching the game and I must say the first half was terrible. The rain did not help and I guess loosing David Villa to an injury did not help the Spanish. But then in the second half they started to play well and were fully deserving of their win. Looking closely at the game and paying a lot of attention to David Silva, I wondered to myself, is Silva really the kind of player we are looking for to add width to our team?
Silva does not stand out as an out and out winger. Silva is not the player who will bombard down the flank and beat players for pace and whip in crosses or take shots from out wide. Don’t get me wrong, I think Silva is a great player but he seems to play a bit like Luis Garcia; can play on either flanks or just behind the striker, has a lot of creativity, intelligent player, has deft touch, works well between the lines and always capable of scoring goals as we saw in the game against Russia.
I would certainly not mind seeing Silva at Anfield next season but if Rafa wants a true out and out winger then I do not think Silva is the answer. He should buy Silva and then maybe get someone like Bentley to be the out and out winger.
