After suggestions this morning that Chelsea may be planning a bid for Torres, Rafa has come out to quickly quash any speculation and he says that Torres is not for sale. I thought as much. It would have been a huge shock if Liverpool were willing to part ways with Torres after the season he had. The exciting thing is that I believe Torres can only get better and that is a scary prospect for the rest of the Premiership. But one has to wonder, where did all this speculation come from that Torres may be leaving?
My first thought is that this all hinges on Hicks. I personally have never liked Hicks and I feel he has a business mind first before thinking about Liverpool. For him he probably sees Torres as a good investment. He bought him for £26m and now he can sell him for £50m, which is almost 100% profit. In business terms that would make sense and Hicks would be laughing all the way to the bank. So maybe he gave a hint out to the likes of Chelsea that, if you show me the money I could sell you Torres. I don’t think Chelsea would make such an audacious bid without having a little bit of a reason to do so.
According to Rafa, he believes Torres forms the spine of the team together with Carragher, Gerrard and Mascherano. I think Reina should be added onto that ‘spine’ list. Now if we can add another player this some to be part of that spine, preferably the player being a winger, then I think we are almost there in our quest for success.
