I was reading just now and there was a headline saying: Benitez fires off title warning. I did not know what to make of this headline so I decided to read the article. Basically Rafa is saying that there is no way we can compete for the title because Manure and Chelski continue to spend big money to buy big players and we can not match the amounts of money they are spending.

I hear where Rafa is coming from. If the Yanks do not splash out the cash we can forget about challenging for the title. It is an easy formula for success; spend big and you will win. Look at Chelsea, who would ever have thought they could be champions of England a couple of years ago? But after splashing out millions, they won the league. I like to term it ‘buying the league title’. If you have lots of money to spend and you buy world class players then chances are you will win. The same would go for Liverpool. If Rafa had £100m to spend this summer we would surely be able to push if not win next season. We would be able to buy the likes of Alves at right-back, get quality wingers like Quaresma, Bentley or Mancini and even get someone like David Villa to play upfront will Torres and whilst at it why not get a really big name signing like Messi or Ronhino? With another world class striker, Rafa would certainly find a way to tweak the formation to accommodate two strikers.

But for now we do not have the luxury of spending £100m and we just have to do with what we have. There is nothing more I would want to see than Liverpool challenge for the title next season. It will not be easy and some money has to be spent. I am sure Rafa has not thrown in the towel already but he is just calling it as it is. Maybe it’s a tactic to say all this and get the Yanks to splash out, after all Rafa is the master tactician and now he has to take his tactics off the pitch and use them in the boardroom.
