When Torres comes back

The sight we all wanted to see, Fernando Torres back on the pitch. It was great to see him get a run out in the closing minutes against West Brom. We have missed Torres over the last couple of games, we could have down with his killer instinct infront of goal against Atletico and Spurs but whilst Torres was out we did not do too badly. But now that El Nino is back, what is this going to mean for us? “Good times ahead” a lot of us will be saying, but spare a thought for Rafa and the players.

We need Torres Back

After our inability to convert chances on the weekend against Spurs, I feel we really need Torres back in action. We had done so well up until now without our lethal striker but we need a player of such quality. Torres could easily have made the difference on Saturday from us loosing 2-1 to us winning 4-0. I just hope that he has fully recovered from his hamstring injury. Rafa says Torres may start tomorrow against Atletico Madrid or atleast he will get a place on the bench. There is no need to rush players back from hamstring injuries but the sooner we get Torres back the better.

Our luck is going to run out

Another Monday and another great weekend for the Reds. I have told my doctor to be on the alert for me as if things continue to go this way this season, I am going to get a heart attack! Saturdays game was yet another rollercoaster ride for us. But as we have done so many times this season, we came back from behind and won. Everyone is saying that this is the sign of Champions but I am not quite sure. Champions beat teams like Wigan at home 4-0. Yes, 3 points are 3 points but we need to be getting these 3 points with ease.

Stepping Out Of Defence

Something caught my eye whilst I was watching the Premiership games this weekend and I thought I would share it with you this morning. I have seen, not only this season but in the past, how effective it is to have a central defender who is able to step out of the defensive line and provide an attacking option. The attacking option maybe in the form of carrying the ball from defence into midfield and then carrying on their run into the box to provide an attacking option. Or it could just be carrying the ball from defence and getting close enough to goal to take a shot.

We all saw how effective this was when Daniel Agger scored that wonder goal by stepping out of defence and the defenders were all backing away from him as most do not expect a central defender to be able to hit a scorcher from 30 yards. You literally have a free shot as a central defender if you are able to carry the ball into the oppositions half as chances are you will not be shut down as they expect you to pass the ball. Stevie G should play on the right

After watching our win on Saturday against Manchester United, I got thinking about what would our best starting eleven be this coming season. I was highly impressed with Alonso and Mascherano in midfield. I feel Alonso has shown a lot of character by bouncing back from the constant speculation this summer surrounding his future. One would have thought that after Rafa made it clear Alonso would be sold if the price was right, Alonso would have dropped his head and not put in any effort this season. But he has done the opposite and come out playing well. Credit to Xabi! It is still not the Alonso form we all saw and loved in 2005 but it is certainly much better than the Alonso we saw last season. Read the rest of this entry »

It is time for Dubai to takeover

I know it is Tuesday, I was not able to give my Monday thoughts as there was a lot of chaos trying to keep up to track with the last day of the transfer window. I was up right until midnight keeping a close eye on the activity. A lot took place yesterday and at the end of the day I was left rather hurt and dejected. I really hoped Berbatov would not go to Manchester United as I believe he is a great player and can only make Manchester United stronger. And then there was the drama of Robhino going to Manchester City. It looks like there is a new Chelsea in town now that the Arabs have taken over Manchester City. One can only imagine what they would have done if they still had another week to play in the transfer market. I understand that they also made a bid for David Villa yesterday which was turned down. Get us some wingers and a set piece man

If you are like me, you are still on a high from Saturday’s dramatic win over Middlesbrough. I have been watching the Stevie G goal over and over again and I still can not seem to get enough of it. But that was then and we now have to move on starting with Standard Liege on Wednesday night and then a trip to Villa Park over the weekend. I will be honest, I still have a lot of concerns about our team even if we have won our first two games of the season. They have not been ‘pretty’ wins and we should count ourselves rather fortunate to have 6 points when we so easily could have only had one (that from a 0-0 draw at Sunderland). So instead of only having a point we have six, that means we have potentially made up five points. I remember watching a Graeme Souness interview sometime ago when he was asked if Liverpool could win the league again and he said, “Without a shadow of a doubt they can, it will take lot of work, a bit of luck and lots of money.” Read the rest of this entry »

Not a bad start, it could have been worse

The start has finally arrived. The Premiership season started on Saturday and now my life can return to normal. It had been a tough couple of months without my daily feed of Premiership action. I managed to catch a bit of the Arsenal match as that was the first game of the season. I saw Nasri’s early goal and I thought that Arsenal were going to win the match by a mile but when I tuned back to watch the conclusion of the match, I was surprised that they had failed to build on their early goal. No disrespect to West Brom but I would have thought that Arsenal would have won by more. As I waited patiently for our match at the Stadium of Light, I had the pleasure of witnessing Usain Bolt breaking the 100m record at the Olympics. Imagine having that kind of pace down our left wing!
