Aurelio out for 6 months - so will Dossena stay?

Here we go again! Fabio Aurelio is injured…again! Aurelio has had some bad luck with injuries ever since he joined us from Valencia. He always seems to get injured when he is actually going through a good spell. Well the latest injury is rather bizarre. Aurelio twisted his knee whilst playing with his children in the garden and as a result he will require surgery and is likely to be out of action for 6 months. This means that Aurelio will miss the rest of the year.

I am a huge fan of Aurelio, especially after THAT freekick at Old Trafford. But besides that, his game has improved ever since we signed him and he became Rafa’s first choice left back. Now Rafa has to make a plan! Dossena was set to leave this summer and go back to Italy but now with the news of Aurelio, will Rafa still let Dossena go? For me, I will be happy if Insua becomes our first choice left back in the absence of Aurelio but we still need cover.

We have signed Chris Mavinga from Paris Saint Germain who is also a left back. Mavinga is only 18 years old so he does not have a lot of experience so I do not think we can intrust him to be our second choice left back. So with that said, I think Rafa may just decide to hang onto Dossena following this Aurelio injury.

Dossena can go

I have cursed Andrea Dossena many times this season, except, of course, when he scored that audacious goal against Manchester United.
But the Italian, it seems, hasn’t been too happy himself with his time spent at Anfield, and wants to move on this summer, according to a report in Italian newspaper Tuttosport. “I have spoken with Rafael Benitez. He told me that if they receive an offer that satisfies both the club and me, he will facilitate my transfer. I would run to Juve,” he is understood to have said.

The Bianconeri were among Liverpool’s competitors for his signature last season too. I believe this time they are keen to have him move there, despite the fact that he hasn’t been first-choice for Benitez this season. But English football and the Italian game is a study in contrasts, and for a player who lists learning English as the most important thing he has done in the Premiership, this will be a welcome change for him. I’m not particularly sorry to see him go. I only wish he had managed a few more flicks over the goalkeeper like the one that went sailing over Edwin van der Saar this March.

Anyone but Dossena please

Fabio Aurelio is going to be out of action for two weeks after picking up a calf strain in his left leg against Marseille. Yet again, Aurelio is injured. That has been the story of his Liverpool career. Whenever the Brazilian is getting into some bit of good form, he picks up an injury. I believe if Fabio had a full season with no injuries, he could easily become one of the best left backs in Europe. So now that we will be without our first choice left back for 2 weeks, that means Dossena is going to have to step in!

Liverpool 4 - Rangers 0

Rangers v Liverpool - Pre Season Friendly

Well in the past few days there have been a lot of discussions in the media about our supposed “gun-shy” strikers. I just have to ask; if two strikers totaling 50+ goals between them and a small group of others scoring 10+ each themselves is indeed “gun-shy” then was anyone successful scoring last season? I mean seriously, I’m glad I’m not drinking whatever they’ve gotten into, because it’s left them quite daft.

Today found our anemic offense up in Scotland for a showdown with Rangers at Ibrox. A storied club with tremendous support, not to mention last season’s UEFA Cup runners-up this figured to be a stern test for us. It’s no secret that Scottish sides usually run a pretty tight ship at the back, and so I had figured on a 1-0.

Dossena completes Liverpool move

It is official, Andrea Dossena has completed his move from Udinese to Liverpool. Dossena signed a four year deal today and becomes Liverpool’s second signing of the summer after having completed the free transfer of Philipp Degen. It is suggested that Dossena has cost Liverpool £9m. Dossena is seen as the ideal replacement for Riise in the left back position.

I have not seen Dossena play before but I am hoping he lives up to the legacy of great Italian wing backs such as Maldini and Zambrotta. What is interesting to note is that, this same day exactly a year ago, Liverpool signed Fernando Torres and look at how well he has turned out. If Dossena can be half as good as Torres then we will probably have the best left back in the league. I can not remember the last Italian to play for Liverpool, it has been a while if ever we have had an Italian at Anfield.

Welcome Andrea and good luck.
