A thought dawned upon me today with regards to the possibility of loosing Mascherano to Barcelona in the summer. It looks like Alonso may just stay now since Real Madrid are saying they can’t afford the 35m pounds we want for him. But if Mascherano leaves, we will need another holding midfielder. Lucas has stepped in at times for Masch but I have little faith in Lucas. How about Agger filling in the Mascherano role?

Agger is a center back by profession but I am sure he can be turned into a very effective defensive midfielder. He can obviously tackle well and he is one of the best center backs I have ever seen with the ball at his feet. He can pick out a good pass and as a center back he is great at stepping with the ball out of defence and launching an attack. And not to forget his rocket of a left foot.
What do you think about this?
Reports today suggest that AC Milan are going to step up their efforts in trying to prize Daniel Agger away from Liverpool. I will be the first to say that this would be a huge loss for Liverpool if Agger were to leave. Before Agger got injured last season, he and Carragher formed one of the best central defence pairings in Europe. It was unfortunate Agger got injured but then Skrtel stepped in and he also formed a great partnership with Carragher until Skrtel himself got injured and now we are back to the Carragher and Agger pairing. This just goes to show that we need quality and depth especially in the heart of defence and letting Agger go to AC Milan would mean that we are hampered in central defence.

The second Martin Skrtel stayed on the turf I knew that he was seriously injured. His demeanor, work rate, and passion for the game that is so evident week in and week out meant there was no chance of him pulling anything with the score and match the way they were.
After that initial thought, I was hit by a second thought:
“perhaps this is just what we need”

Daniel Agger will now get his chance due to the unfortunate injury to Martin Skrtel. I have always been a fan of Agger and was a tad disappointed when he lost his place to Skrtel. I will be the first to say I was never a fan of Skrtel when he first arrived at Anfield but he has grown and matured into a great centre back that I am very happy with. There was a time the Agger and Carragher partnership was hailed as one of the best in the league. I hope now that the partnership will be reformed, they can do just as well, if not better than Carra and Martin have been doing so far this season.
There had been suggestions that Agger would be on his way to Real Madrid in January but I doubt that will happen now. He has been given a golden opportunity to kickstart his Anfield career again and I am sure he is going to take this opportunity with both arms and show us what he is made of. I was thinking of the possibility of Agger at Real and it dawned upon me that it could be a Agger - Cannavaro partnership. Two very talented centre backs but not the tallest of centre backs. Any team up against them with a huge centre forward would do well as you would just pump in long balls into the box all day. If that is my one criticism about Agger, its that he is not the best in the air but I guess that is where Jamie would have to come in.
I mentioned sometime back that it would be great to have a centre back who could step out of defence and offer an attacking option for us. Agger fits the bill perfectly. In his time at Anfield he has already chalked up 5 goals. Hopefully he will now add to that tally this season with his sweet left foot.
