Liverpool are monitoring Valencia centre back Shkodran Mustafi, according to a journalist from Superdeporte, Valencia’s local newspaper.

Journalist Dani Merono shared on his Twitter feed that the Reds have been scouting the German international this season and they will be back to watch him again when Valencia play Liverpool’s Europa League opponents Villarreal this weekend. Jurgen Klopp is said to want the player at Anfield next season.

The 24 year old has been the stand out performer for a Valencia side that has struggled this season. After sacking Gary Neville and putting former Reds assistant manager Pako Ayestaran in charge however, their form has picked up after beating Barcelona and rising to eighth place in the table.

Mustafi has played 36 matches in all competitions this season, scoring 2 goals. He made his first appearance for Germany under Joachim Low before the 2014 World Cup and although not making the initial 23 man squad, he replaced Marco Reus due to injury. In the tournament, he made 3 appearances before a thigh injury against Algeria in the last 16 ruled him out for the rest of the competition.
