Former Liverpool star John Barnes agrees with Brendan Rodgers’ verdict that Daniel Sturridge’s injury woes last season derailed the club’s top four pursuit.

The England international netted his first two goals since making his return from hip surgery back in May over the weekend, which were vital in the 3-2 victory over Aston Villa.

Sturridge missed the vast majority of the 2014/15 campaign with a series of injury issues, with the most notable blow a thigh strain picked up while on international duty just a handful of games into the season.

The now 26-year-old managed just 750 minutes of Premier League football across the campaign, limiting him to four goals, which Rodgers described as the major factor in his club’s failure to qualify for this term’s Champions League and challenge for a trophy.

And TitanBet brand ambassador Barnes, although he doesn’t agree with the silverware angle, thinks that the Liverpool manager’s verdict is fair:

“I think it [Sturridge’s injury] cost us the top four,” he said.

“Once we lost Suarez and Sturridge, that’s a lot of the goals scored taken away. That will impact you in an attacking sense.”

Barnes went on to say that keeping Sturridge fit could be the difference between Liverpool finishing in the top four this season and another campaign of Europa League action:

“Well, he gives us a chance of being in the top four.” He said.

“You can never tell. Daniel Sturridge alone may not be enough, but we have much more of a goalscoring threat. It can’t hurt, let’s put it that way.”
