Liverpool are set to offer defender Mamadou Sakho a new deal according to reports. Sakho’s current deal runs until 2017 and he will be offered a new five-year contract on improved terms. The giant central defender has not featured for the Reds this season yet as Brendan Rodgers has opted to pair Skrtel and Lovren in the heart of defence.

Sakho has been the subject of must speculation this transfer window due to him not featuring yet for Liverpool. But Liverpool are adamant that they are not willing to let Sakho go following interest from both Roma and Bayer Leverkusen over the past week.

It will be surprising if Sakho accepts a new deal given the current situation of him not being in the team. A player of Sakho’s quality needs to be playing regularly and if the opportunities do not arise then one may even see him asking for a move to another club.

There is no doubt Sakho has had some low moments at Liverpool especially with his injury record. But when he is fit he hardly puts a foot wrong when he is in the side. Sakho has received mixed reactions from Liverpool fans when he is in the side, largely due to that fact that he does not look comfortable on the ball given that Rodgers wants his defenders to play the ball out from the back.

The presence of Sakho in the Liverpool squad will be important this season as it will keep Skrtel and Lovren on their toes knowing that if they slip up there is someone equally as good waiting to come in. And given the number of games the Reds will play this season, it is imperative to have quality backup players.

Sakho is a much better player than Lovren. He adds steel while Lovren is more like a pansy.
