Daniel Sturridge has backed Steven Gerrard to return as Liverpool manager in the future, having admitted he is ‘devastated’ the Liverpool captain will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

Sturridge is set to return to the Liverpool squad for this weekend’s clash with West Ham following five months out through injury, and hopes he will play alongisde Gerrard for the remaining four months of the season before he moves to LA Galaxy.

“Since I first joined the club words can’t describe what he’s done for the club and the country,” he told BBC 5 Live.

“He’s still a role model of mine and the team. He’ll be sorely missed and is someone who has helped me as a footballer.

“He’s still one of the best players and will be hard to replace.

“I’m devastated he’s leaving but it’s football and I guess people have to move on and it’s unfortunate.

“I’m sure he’ll be back at the club at some capacity here soon and I’m sure he’ll manage the club one day.”
