Liverpool are preparing to make a £39.1million offer for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, according to reports from Spain.

The Reds have made the France international their number one ‘transfer priority’, although a deal is only likely in the summer, with Carlo Ancelotti showing no signs of wanting to sell at the midway point of the season.

Benzema was targetted in the summer as the man to replace Luis Suarez, but the Reds couldn’t make a deal happen.

Now the former Lyon man is thought to be more open to a transfer, having grown unsettled with reports Real are keen to sign Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero and Marco Reus.

Liverpool have made it clear they see Benzema as their first choice target, with Brendan Rodgers keen to add a marquee signing to a strikeforce that has managed just three Premier League goals this season in the absence of Daniel Sturridge.
