Real Madrid right back Alvaro Arbeloa is set to reject a move to Arsenal and Chelsea this January, in favour of returning to Liverpool, according to the Daily Express.

The former Spain international is frustrated at his lack of playing time at the Bernabeu this season, having started just five La Liga matches.

Sources in Spain claim the 31-year-old is hoping to move this January, with Arsenal in the hunt for defensive reinforcements and Jose Mourinho keen to add the player he worked with successfully during his time in La Liga.

But Arbeloa has his heart set on a return to Liverpool, and the Reds could be willing to negotiate a deal given Glen Johnson looks set to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Johnson is currently sidelined with an injury, whilst Jon Flanagan is yet to kick a ball this season.

That leaves 20-year-old Javier Manquillo as the Reds only fit right back, meaning Rodgers could look to add the experienced full back who left the club in 2009.
