Liverpool have opened talks with Martin Skrtel over a new contract, according to widespread reports.

Sunday marked the seventh anniversary of when Skrtel completed a £6.5million move to Anfield from Russian side Zenit St Petersburg, and he is now considered the Reds first choice centre back.

Skrtel has made 270 appearances for the club in that time and declared the club was ‘now in my heart’ on his personal website over the weekend.

Now it appears the club are set to begin negotiations on a new deal for the defender, whose current contract expires in 2016.

The Reds are also keen to tie down the likes of Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson and Jon Flanagan to new deals, with the latter set to see his current deal expire at the end of the season.
