Simon Mignolet insists he has ‘nothing to prove’ ahead of his return to the Liverpool first team this evening.

The Belgian is set to return from the start, after replacing Brad Jones after 17 minutes on Boxing day when the Australian suffered a thigh injury.

Mignolet was axed from the starting XI ‘indefinitley’ earlier in the month after a string of poor performances, and looked shaky with the ball at his feet during the win at Burnley.

However, Mignolet insists he is under no pressure and feels he has nothing to prove ahead of his return.

Mignolet said: “I don’t have to prove anything. The only thing I have to do is work hard in every game and do my best and then we will see what comes through.

“The only thing I can do is work hard and play my game, what more can I do?

“Hopefully we will build on this and the only thing I can do is show on the pitch what I am capable of.

“I will not discuss what we said, but it was an honest meeting from both sides. Why not? And that is always a positive thing.

“The negative thing was going out of the team but you try and make it a positive and that is what I am trying to do.

“Sometimes, like the manager said, you can reflect on certain things when you are out of the team because during the busy periods we have had you maybe don’t get a chance to look at things.

“That is what I have done in this period, together with the goalkeeper coach and the gaffer, and you learn a lot. We can move on and hopefully we can build on that.

“We spoke together, cleared up a few things and I think that was a positive discussion and I will keep my head down and work hard and try and do my best.”
