Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has labelled the rumours linking Andre Villas-Boas with the Liverpool job as ‘ridiculous.’

Reports emerged over the weekend suggesting the Reds were looking towards the former Chelsea and Tottenham manager as a replacement for Brendan Rodgers, who has overseen a poor start to the 2014-15 season at Anfield.

However Murphy has been quick to dismiss the reports, pointing to the fact Villas-Boas failed when given Premier League opportunities with both Chelsea and Tottenham.

Talking to Alan Brazil on talkSPORT, Murphy said, ”Brendan deserves to keep his job. It would be a shock if he does go. If for some reason he does, AVB would not be on the list of 20 managers to replace him at Liverpool, never mind be the number one.

“It’s ridiculous. He failed at Chelsea, he failed at Tottenham. Why would you take him at Liverpool?”

Liverpool face a must win clash with FC Basel in the Champions League tomorrow evening, knowing anything less than three points and qualification to the last 16 will see the pressure mount on Rodgers once more.
