Liverpool are set to begin formal contract talks with captain Steven Gerrard this week.

The Anfield legend is set to see his current deal expire at the end of the season, meaning he could hold talks with other clubs as early as this January.

But the Reds are keen to keep a hold of the 34-year-old, and are set to hold talks with him and agent Struan Marshall this week.

There has been interest in Gerrard from a host of MLS clubs, but Brendan Rodgers has already said he wants to keep the former England captain beyond this season, and sees him as a key part of his plans.

Gerrard has played every minute of Premier League football for the Reds this season, scoring three goals.

Contract talks with England stars Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling have also started, but are yet to reach any conclusion.
