Liverpool are set to make an offer for Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, according to Metro.

The Reds have been linked with a move for a new goalkeeper to challenge Simon Mignolet for the number one spot, with former Barcelona keeper and free agent Victor Valdes one name mentioned.

But the publication reckons the Reds have turned their attentions to Real Madrid skipper and World Cup winning captain Iker Casillas, who has found first team opportunities difficult to come by in recent seasons.

The 33-year-old has made a number of high profile errors in recent weeks, but that has not put off Brendan Rodgers, who believes the Spanish stopper is in need of a new challenge.

And reports in Spain suggest the Reds have been given the go ahead to make a transfer offer in the January transfer window, with Real Madrid happy to sell.

Carlo Ancelotti signed Costa Rica’s World Cup hero Keylor Navas in the summer, and sees him as the long term replacement for the experienced Casillas.
