Liverpool legend Jimmy Case believes Liverpool would have been crowned Premier League champions last season, had Jamie Carragher delayed his retirement by a year.

The Reds missed out on the Premier League title by two points to Manchester City, with a defence that conceded 50 Premier League goals ultimately proving their downfall.

And Case – a part of the successful Liverpool side of the 1970’s – believes it would have been a different story had Carragher been in the side last term.

Case highlighted the defeat to Chelsea and the draw against Crystal Palace in the final weeks of the season, saying neither would have happened had Carragher been on the pitch.

‘If Carragher had stayed on for one more season, Liverpool would have won it. He would not have played every game, but the way they lost it against Chelsea and Crystal Palace would not have happened,’ he said.

‘Steven Gerrard might still have slipped against Chelsea, but he would not have been the last man. Carragher would have been covering him and Demba Ba would not have galloped away to score.

‘And those three goals in the last 10 minutes at Palace – I know, for a fact, that wouldn’t have happened if Jamie had been there to nip it in the bud when the first goal went in. He would have organised it and pulled down the shutters.’

Don’t make my toes laugh, Jimmy Case. Had the frigging hoofer stayed on at Liverpool last season, the Merseyside club would not even have qualified for Champions League Football, let alone win the English premiership title.
