Liverpool are hoping Daniel Sturridge will be fit to play some part in their Champions League clash against FC Basel on Wednesday night, reports talkSPORT.

The forward has missed the Reds last five matches in all competitions, a period which has coincided with a poor run of form for Brendan Rodgers men.

Sturridge was not fit enough for the bench against Everton on Saturday, and Brendan Rodgers used his free day on Sunday to oversee a fitness session with the 25-year-old ahead of Wednesday night’s clash in Switzerland.

“I’ll see how he is,” revealed Rodgers. “He wasn’t far away for Everton, but he certainly wasn’t fit enough to be on the bench.

“We needed to see if he could train on the Friday. But I got the message on the Thursday night that he would struggle, so he wasn’t really close to playing.”

Mario Balotelli has led the line in the absence of Sturridge, although the Italian has only scored once in his six Liverpool appearances so far, although that goal did come in the Champions League win over FC Ludogorets.
