Bayern Munich forward Xherdan Shaqiri has admitted Liverpool were keen to sign him over the summer, but the move was blocked by the German champions, reports the Metro.

Shaqiri was heavily linked with a move to Anfield, having fallen down the pecking order at the Allianz Arena last season, and having impressed for Switzerland during the summer’s World Cup.

‘Liverpool made a bid for me before the World Cup but Bayern put their foot down and told me, ‘We’re not going to sell you’,’ he said.

‘My contract runs until 2016 and I could possibly extend it.

‘I will consider my decision during the winter break.’

Shaqiri is set to face England for Switzerland on Monday’s opening Euro 2016 qualifier in Basel.
