Steven Gerrard admits he cannot wait for Liverpool’s return to the Champions League, having craved being a part of Europe’s elite club competition for the past five years.

Liverpool are set to return to the competition in just under two weeks time when they face Bulgarian side Ludogorets at Anfield, in a group which also includes reigning champions Real Madrid.

And Gerrard cannot wait to get the campaign started.

“When you watch the Champions League and you’re not involved there’s jealousy and envy seeing other players play on the big stage and hearing that Champions League music,” the captain said.

“Because of the experiences I’ve had and gained over the years, I was so desperate to taste it again, even if it was just one more time.

“Without getting too carried away I think we are now a very good team and I think we can become excellent as there is still room for improvement.”
