Sebastian Coates is set to complete a deadline day loan move to Sunderland, according to the Express.

The Uruguayan featured often for the Reds in pre-season, but has failed to make the squad for any of the Reds opening three Premier League matches.

The 23-year-old missed all of last season with a serious injury, and in fact has only managed 12 senior appearances since arriving as a highly sought after youngster three years ago.

Brendan Rodgers has decided to let the young defender spend the season on loan with another Premier League club, in order to pick up experience of the English game.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet did a fine job with Fabio Borini during his loan spell at the Stadium of Light last season, and Rodgers feels Coates could benefit from a season in the north East.

He currently finds himself behind the likes of Dejan Lovren, Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure in the pecking order, but a successful season in the Premier League could convince the Liverpool boss he has a long term future at Anfield.
