Liverpool have opened talks over a shock transfer for former Chelsea forward Samuel Eto’o, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 33-year-old is and his representatives are reported to have held talks with Anfield officials, with Brendan Rodgers left to have the final say on whether to offer the free agent a contract.

Dutch club Ajax are also said to be interested, but are a long way off meeting the Cameroon international’s wage demands.

Eto’o fell out with Jose Mourinho last season when the Chelsea boss poked fun at the strikers age.

He is keen to stay in the Premier League, and the chance to join a title rival and prove a point to Mourinho is certainly appealing.

Liverpool have been linked with a number of strikers since the departure of Luis Suarez almost a month ago.

Would you like to see Samuel Eto’o at Anfield? Surely he would be considered a stop gap signing until January? Are there really no better alternatives out there? Let us know your thoughts below.

Take away the fact he played for Chelsea last season – he managed 12 goals, and in games against the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal.

He’s an experienced player, he’s won the Champions League. We have had no luck with signing strikers so far this summer, and it’s not as if he would play every game. I think he would be a decent option.

He was a poacher last season, and with the likes of Sterling, Coutinho, Henderson and Gerrard creating chances, he’s sure to stick a few away at important times.

Agreed and from my point of view hes still better than lambert and borini. We need caliber striker like him if we’re unable to have a young promising striker while sturridge get injured every now and then.

This would be a major disappointment when you consider we got £75million for Suarez and essentially replaced him with Lambert and Eto’o for a combined figure of £4million.

There has to be at least one big name signing before the close of the transfer window.

Totally agree, also way to slow, with 3 days remaining and still no replacement,we are down to a free agent!
What is really happening behind the scenes, there must be a reason why we have not signed a forward!

Can anyone tell me if we paid 20 mill for Lovren ,25 for Lallana why we wont go out and nail the signing of such a good left back!16-18 Mill is a good deal for this player (Moreno)what is the issue?

With that kinda money for moreno i would rather go for ROJO who are more versatile.

To be honest, if Rodgers intention is to play Flanighan in his preferred role on the right side, I do not really understand why they do not want to add Rojo over on the left as added coverage for Moreno. With the extra games due this year, we do not need to overload a new player while he is trying to adjust to the team.

With the striker option, I disagree with the negative thoughts on Eto. Ok, he might not be the star signing we were all thinking of at the start of the window, however, as we have seen, we have attempted to sign others but for various reasons, they have not worked out. Instead of making a ‘rush’ signing just to have someone there, I believe Eto’ could be a very useful ‘stop-gap’. Not too much of a fee and especially if they get his wage demand reduced, with both his European and premier league experience, he could prove quite valuable. And boy would he have something to prove to Mourinho.
