Liverpool have been put on red alert after reports in Spain suggested Real Madrid are looking to sell Xabi Alonso this summer, according to the Express.

Spanish outlet El Confidencial claims that Carlo Ancelotti is ready to part with the 32-year-old, after he returned from Spain’s awful World Cup campaign in poor physical condition.

Alonso is already facing a fight for his place at the Bernabeu, with the Champions League winners strengthening their midfield with the arrivals of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez.

Liverpool have been busy strengthening their midfield this summer, with Emre Can and Adam Lallana having already joined for a combined total of £35million.

But Alonso remains a firm favourite amongst Liverpool supporters, and could provide back up for 34-year-old captain Steven Gerrard in the holding midfield role.

The Spaniard has previously hinted at a future return to Anfield, saying: “Liverpool was a very important part in my football career. Especially when we played at Anfield, we achieved great things and we had great nights at Anfield.

“There is a passion and atmosphere that comes when you play in England in the Premier League. It’s special and I had the privilege to play for five years for Liverpool, and it’s a really special club.

“Anfield is a beautiful stadium and it has a certain charm and style that is very difficult to find in other stadiums. So I miss it a little bit; I really enjoyed the time that I spent in England, it was very important for my football career.”
