Arsene Wenger is planning an audacious swoop for Liverpool vice-captain Daniel Agger, according to the Daily Star.

Agger has been strongly linked with a move away from Anfield this summer following the arrival of Dejan Lovren from Southampton.

Barcelona and former club Brondby are the clubs that have shown an interest so far, and reports emerging from Agger’s native Denmark suggest Arsenal have now joined the race for his signature.

Brondby chairman Jan Bech Andersen recently admitted the club were prepared to do all they can to bring Agger back to Denmark.

“We will work really, really hard to secure Daniel but as he has also said, when he was here with Liverpool, the timing has to be right,” he said.

Brendan Rodgers said last month he had no intention of allowing the 29-year-old to leave the club this summer, but that was before the Reds announced the £20million capture of Lovren.

Agger himself said he was not prepared to be a third choice at Anfield for much longer following the conclusion to last season.

“It is no secret that I had problems last season and I am considering things,” Agger said.

“How things turned out last season is not sustainable for me. I am here now and it is up to me to show the coach that I should play.”

Arsene Wenger is in the market for a new centre back this summer, with Thomas Vermaelen looking set to leave the club.

Manchester United and Barcelona are both chasing the Belgian international.
