Liverpool are being linked with a shock move for Chelsea’s out of favour star Ashley Cole according to the Metro.

The Chelsea left-back has hardly featured this season under Jose Mourinho and with his contract coming to an end this season, it is being suggested that Liverpool could be looking to bring in the England left-back on a free transfer.

Jose Mourinho has recently stated that he is happy with Ashley Cole remaining at Chelsea after this season, but the Chelsea boss insists that the final decision lies with Cole himself.
“I like the player, I trust the player, I want him to stay,” said Mourinho. “The club is happy with that, so we don’t have a problem but [his decision] is another story that I cannot control. It’s another part of the story that doesn’t depend on us.”

There is no doubt that Cole is a good player but at 33-years old, it would surprise me if FSG sanction such a transfer for Liverpool. Our policy has been to bring in young players into the squad.

Liverpool are short of options at left-back with Jose Enrique being out injured for most parts of the season. Aly Cissokho who joined the Reds on a season long loan from Valencia has been filling in at left-back lately and it is fair to say that his form has improved slightly compared to his earlier days at the club but he is still very far away from being the first choice left-back for the club.

One thing that Ashley Cole would bring to the Liverpool side if he were to join in the summer is some much needed experience. Especially if (or should I say ‘when’) we are back in the Champions League next season, we will need some players in the squad who have Champions League experience. It would be great to have Cole as a squad player whilst we have another young, top quality left-back in the side, but I doubt Cole would want to join a club where he is a squad player yet again.

Would Ashley Cole be a good signing for Liverpool?

We should go all out to buy Luke Shaw next summer. We should not waste cash on over priced and over rated players. Hopefully Martin Kelly will get through his fitness injury issue too. The manager and coaching staff have done an amazing job in getting the confidence level so high. All the players are playing with such confidence and this is the key to success. Luke Shaw would be a steady guy with no cultural issues and we should try to have 75% of our players from a similar backround. I think Phil Jones was a miss and we will face him for many years to come. we should spend the extra cash for these guys and not gamble on the partly/unknown at all. when going for foregin players we should make sure they are from the elite group like Suarez or Skirtel/Hypia etc. Right now it is a shame Carragher is not there to push us on another notch. Still young Flanagan is the real deal. He is frightening the life out of wingers on his side. Just like the old days!!!!
