One player who has been linked with a move to Liverpool for a while now will not be making the move anymore. Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso has penned a new deal with the Spanish giants that will see him remain in Spain until 2016.

Alonso’s contract was coming to an end this summer and there were suggestions that he could be headed back to Anfield in a move that would have been welcomed by many Liverpool fans. We are a bit thin when it comes to central midfield options as we only have Gerrard, Lucas, Allen and Henderson who can comfortably fill in those roles. Alonso would have given us more depth and experience but alas, we will not be seeing that. As great a passer of the ball that Xabi is, his age and lack of speed may have been a problem had he joined the Reds; can you imagine how slow a midfield we would have with Gerrard and Alonso in there? Maybe it is a good thing that there is no chance of Alonso coming to Liverpool, maybe now Brendan Rodgers can go out and sign and young dynamic central midfielder.

Real Madrid have confirmed Alonso’s new deal on their website by stating, “Xabi Alonso will continue with Real Madrid until 2016.”

Madrid have also ruled out the departure or arrivals of any players this January transfer window which means that Alvaro Morata who has also been linked with a loan move to Liverpool will not be arriving to bolster the Reds attack.
