Liverpool have been continually linked with a move for Derby County midfielder Will Hughes. Brendan Rodgers has come out and confirmed he has looked at Hughes but no bid has been made.

Rodgers said as reported by ESPN, “He (Hughes), among many other players, is probably one we’ve looked at.”

The Reds are currently thin on central midfield options and it is time to start looking for a long term replacement for Steven Gerrard. Hughes has been earmarked as a potential replacement for the Liverpool captain but as Rodgers pointed out, no bid has been made for the 18-year old and he may actually be better off playing at Derby where he is able to get more football under his belt right now.

“I read something that said we’d put in a bid, or that something had been agreed. There’s nothing further from the truth,” said Rodgers.

“I think Will Hughes is a wonderful young talent who just needs to play football. And for me, he’s probably at the best place he could be. This is something that’s been ongoing. Speculation is something I never normally comment on. But I have the interests of the player at heart.

“This is a kid who, if he picks up the paper every day or every weekend, he’ll see he’s linked with Liverpool. I think he’s in a good place. There’s been no bid, there’s nothing. We will do what we do. We’re always looking for talent – young players, senior players.”

What may happen is that Liverpool may bid to sign Hughes in January and then loan him back to Derby for the rest of the season. That way Liverpool have captured the services of one of England’s brightest prospects whilst he gets plenty of game time at Derby. If he joins Liverpool in January, I do not see him walking straight into the starting lineup as we have so few games being out of Europe and Rodgers is likely to pick his best eleven for every game until the end of the season.

I always say that “where there is smoke there is fire”. Obviously Rodgers will come out and tell us all that no bid has been made but I am sure behind the scenes there is something happening involving Will Hughes and Liverpool. Watch this space!

cant see anything in the quotes to suggest br has admitted an interest in this guy. why do you make up these headlines?

  2. I have already read somewhere that BR IS NOT interested in Hughes.
