The one transfer that I am hoping Liverpool are able to complete in January is reportedly looking good for the Reds according to the Daily Star.

They are reporting that Barcelona’s defender Martin Montoya whom the Reds have been linked with, would be interested in joining Liverpool as he bids to find a club that can offer him more regular football.

The Daily Star reports, “The Barcelona star is yet to make a decision on his future but finds the prospect of joining Liverpool appealing, according to sources in Spain.”

Now the reason I would want this deal to go ahead is that Montoya is a very good player and it is not often Barcelona let their fine young talent leave, but if they do let Montoya go, we know we will be getting a quality right back.

Montoya is still only 22-years old which fits in well with FSG’s ‘buy young’ policy and there would not be a transfer fee if the defender agrees to sign a pre-contract with Liverpool in January and then joins us next season as he is out of contract with the Spanish giants at the end of the current season.

Liverpool need a new right back to come in and keep Glen Johnson on his toes. It is a position that has been covered by Andre Wisdom and Martin Kelly in the past but they are both not natural right backs thus the need for Montoya. With Montoya having come up through the Barcelona youth system, he would be accustomed to the tiki-taka way of play that Brendan Rodgers is still trying to develop at Anfield.

It is also reported that Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Napoli are also interested in Montoya. It would be interesting to see why he would pick Liverpool over these sides that can offer him Champions League football. It would go a long way to show that the lure of joining Liverpool is still there across Europe.

  1. Definitely Liverpool need another quality right back.

IMO Glen Johnson has been one of our star players who doesn’t get recognized for what he brings in the team!
When Johnson is playing, we have width on the right and more options in attack! He also has improved his defending! However, at 29 he does not have many years to go and it would be wise to have the extra quality and depth that Montoya can bring especially if we can some hoe break in to CL next year!
Clearly last week after World Cup Qualifiers, the players IMO looked slow and tired! We need quality depth to be able to withdyand a schedule like Arsenal, Chelsea & Man U have on their plate right now!

Johnson is overhyped. Yes, he looks good going forward, but his decision making is poor once he gets into advance position. Most of the time he cuts in beautifully and shoots with his weaker left foot instead of passing to a forward who is waiting at the shoulder of defenders. The move ends with a wasted effort which is easy catch for goalkeepers or goes out of play. However the club do not have anyone better than Johnson at the moment and wish the club sells him come end of the season and get a player like Montoya.

If Liverpool had Johnson and Montoya at RB we’d be very strong there. I love how the team is being built in such a short time but makes me wonder why they weren’t doing this 20 years ago. Hats off to FSG it’s all their vision and doing.
