Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has said that Xabi Alonso would be allowed to leave the Spanish club if he wishes to do so. Perez was speaking on television show Punto Pelota when he was quizzed about Alonso.

Perez said, “He is one of the most important players and able to overcome everything.

“If he wants to stay at Madrid, he will stay. If he thinks his future is elsewhere then I understand perfectly.

“He is a player who has given everything to Madrid and he will have every opportunity to do what he wants.”

Alonso has been linked with a move back to Liverpool this summer as the Reds look to re-sign the 31-year old midfielder in a bid to add some experience and creativity to the central midfield. It is thought that FSG would give Rodgers special permission to sign the midfielder as they have a strict policy of not buying players over 30.

Xabi is currently out injured and has not featured for Madrid this term following a groin operation during the summer to cure a hernia problem before seeing his hopes of playing at the start of the new season dashed when he fractured a bone in his foot. But Alonso now believes he is almost getting back to full fitness.

“I’m hoping to be playing soon. It’s been a tough summer,” Alonso told reporters.

It is clear that Perez still rates Alonso highly but is willing to let the midfielder leave if he wants to. Liverpool should act on this and do all they can to bring Alonso back as there are very few better passers of the ball in the game today. Alonso may not be as athletic as he was in his Liverpool day and who knows what effect his recent injuries will have on him, but he would still be a decent addition to the Liverpool squad.

I am sure the lure of returning back to Anfield is something Alonso would relish having previously said, “There is always a chance I could go back to the Premier League as I always enjoyed good times there.”
