Well we had a large group of meaningless international fixtures today clogging up the middle of the week for us today.

Of note, Xabi Alonso scored twice as Spain beat Denmark 3-0. Agger was present in the opposing line up, and Fernando Torres picked up an assist on one of the goals.

Everyone’s most anxiously awaited goal scorer this season decided to pick up a goal for his country as well in Robbie Keane. Hopefully that’s a preview for the weekend when he gets his first chance to open his account in front of the Kop.

He stretched his Irish career goal scoring record to 34 goals.

I have not had the chance yet to see Alonso’s goals but just the fact that he scored twice is a good thing. Call me crazy but this is what I think; Rafa never really wanted to sell Alonso and new that he had to get him back to his best form somehow and Rafa decided to tell Alonso that he is going to be sold. Maybe that struck some fear into Alonso as he has always stayed he does not want to leave Liverpool. So maybe this transfer talk has given Alonso a ‘kick up the backside’ and now he is starting to play well again, realising that if he doesn’t Rafa will offload him.

Great to for Keano is score for Ireland, now hopefully he can do it in the Red shirt.

I also gather that Gerrard was the best performer for England in their draw against Czech’s last night.

I tried not to mention the English debacle. It was a poor showing in all. I think that were that match managed by McClaren there would be calls for his head.

I was glad to see the match on live this afternoon though. America played Guatamala in a qualifier today as well. The lighting on the pitch was so poor you could hardly make out what was happening often as not. I can’t imaging playing in those conditions, but we pulled it out 1-0 to get our road to 2010 underway on a positive note.
